Mayrise tackles fly-tipping in London with new in-cab computerised system

Newham Council has introduced a hi-tech solution that will help deal with the scourge of illegally dumped rubbish at the push of a button.

The council has adopted a new computer management system designed by Mayrise Systems that allows council frontline staff to report flytips while on the road and pinpoint exact locations to those tasked to collect them.

Sixteen caged cleansing vehicles and three refuse vehicles that deal specifically with bulky waste items and missed rubbish collections now have in-cab touchscreen computers that allow them to tap in and receive GPS locations for dumped rubbish.

The technology also links in with the council’s customer contact centres and website for faster and more efficient incident reporting and management. The in-cab touchscreen computer also allows for real time communication with frontline street cleansing staff while integration with back office systems significantly reduces unnecessary paperwork.

Councillor Ian Corbett, Newham’s executive member for environment, said: “Residents have the right to a clean and safe environment. Fly-tipping doesn’t just make the borough an unpleasant place, it is also illegal and those responsible will be prosecuted.”

“Until now frontline staff have used a paper system in the office to report flytips. The new management system makes things more efficient and effective; proactively identifying and resolving issues instead of having to spend time completing the paperwork.”

Despite offering a free bulky waste collection service to residents and a value for money trade waste service to businesses, both managed using Mayrise software, street cleansing staff at Newham deal with up to 3,000 fly-tipping incidents per month.

The Mayrise Fly-tipping module is directly integrated with council’s Customer Relationship Management (CRM) systems including links from the council’s website and call centres. This allows for reports from the public to be efficiently recorded by staff dealing directly with customers, rather than those on frontline cleansing duty.

Reported incidents are transmitted directly to street cleansing staff via the Nexcom VTC 1000 in cab computer. Running a mobile version of the Mayrise fly-tipping module together with Mayrise’s integrated mapping solution MapNow, the speed of the in-cab devices allow for improved job allocation, allows staff to locate and identify reported incidents and reduces the amount of paperwork that needs to be completed on return to the office.

Cllr Corbett added: “We will look at how we can bring the benefits from the fly-tipping module to other service areas within waste, such as missed bin collections, bulky collections and recycling. As we use Mayrise management software within other service areas such as highways, street works, street cleansing and street lighting, the opportunities to save money across the council are potentially significant.”
